Description
The Nintendo Switch 2 is a significant, “next-generation” evolution of the original hybrid console. While it maintains the familiar three-mode form factor (TV, Tabletop, Handheld), it is larger, more powerful, and features significant quality-of-life improvements.
Display and Design
The console boasts a 7.9-inch LCD, providing a sharper, more vivid 1080p experience while on the go. The design is slightly larger to accommodate the screen, featuring a gun-metal finish and an all-black colorway at launch. It includes a more stable, fully adjustable stand (similar to the OLED model) that allows for a wide range of angles.
Magnetic Joy-Con 2
The new controllers, dubbed “Joy-Con 2,” attach to the sides of the tablet via magnets, offering a more solid “click” connection. They are slightly larger and more ergonomic than the original Joy-Cons. Notably, they contain optical sensors that enable them to be used as a mouse on a table or lap for compatible games.
Performance and Dock
The Switch 2 is powered by a custom NVIDIA T239 chip, which allows for vastly improved, “PS4-level or better” graphics in portable mode. The redesigned dock now includes a fan to help cool the system, enabling it to push up to 4K resolution to a TV.
GameChat and Social Features
A new “C” button on the right Joy-Con brings up the “GameChat” feature, allowing for built-in, headset-free voice chat and screen sharing with friends. The system also features a dedicated GameShare feature for sharing games with friends, and some games, such as Mario Kart World, are exclusive to this new hardware.
Battery Life
Nintendo estimates the 5,220mAh battery will last between 2 and 6.5 hours depending on the game being played, with faster charging times.
